1.   CAMPUS ALUMNI IN CANNES

Berlinale Talent Campus alumni participated in the following films at this year’s FESTIVAL DE CANNES (12-23 May 2010)

Szelíd Teremtés – A Frankenstein Terv (Tender SonThe Frankenstein Project) by Hungarian filmmaker Kornél Mundruczó (Campus 2004) and Long Boonmee Raleuk Chat (Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives) directed by Apichatpong Weerasethakul and edited by Campus 2006 alumnus Lee Chatametikool are both screened in Competition at the Festival de Cannes.

Finnish filmmaker Juho Kuosmanen (Campus 2009) is participating in the ‘Cinéfondation’ screenings with The Painting Sellers.

‘Quinzaine des Réalisateurs’ selected three feature films that were made by Campus alumni: All Good Children, by Alicia Duffy (Campus 2003); Todos vós Sodes Capitáns by Oliver Laxe (Campus 2009) and Woo Ming Jin's The Tiger Factory, co-written and produced by Edmund Yeo (Campus 2009). The selection also includes two short films directed by Campus alumni: Tre Ore by Annarita Zambrano (Campus 2009) and Zedcrew by Noah Pink (Campus 2010).

2.   CAMPUS INTERNATIONAL


2nd TALENT CAMPUS GUADALAJARA (March 11-15, 2010): ‘PERSUASION AND SEDUCTION – THE ART OF STORYTELLING’

After a successful first edition, the second Talent Campus Guadalajara took place during the 25th Guadalajara International Film Festival. 60 Talents, mainly from Central America and the Caribbean, participated at the Campus programme featuring an array of 50 experts, amongst which Pablo Cruz, Matt Dillon, Doris Dörrie, Barry Gifford, Bernd Lichtenberg, Diego Luna, María Novaro, Jean-Pierre Rehm, Fred Roos, Tony Safford, Rainer Simon, Todd Solondz, Julien Temple and Michael Tolkin. This year’s programme focused on “Persuasion and Seduction - The Art of Storytelling”, offering the Talents the chance to discover how scriptwriting, cinematography, set design or score composing interweave and contribute to intensifying a strong story.

Scriptwriters Ana Valeria González (Mexico), Consuelo Mora (Nicaragua) and Patricia Velásquez (Costa Rica), having joined the Berlinale Talent Campus in previous years, attended the Talent Campus Guadalajara with other Talents from the region.

For the first time, a Talent Press hands-on training programme was organized where emerging film critics were coached by established journalists like Chiara Arroyo, José Carlos Avellar, Juan Carlos Ampié and Orlando Mora. All articles of Talent Press alumni are published throughout the year at www.talentpress.org.

5th TALENT CAMPUS BUENOS AIRES (April 10-13, 2010): ‘DOCUMENTARY CINEMA’

The Talent Campus Buenos Aires, which has been a part of the BAFICI since the beginning and organized under the auspices of the Universidad del Cine, took place April 10-13 and focused on “Documentary Cinema” in particular. Besides, several hands-on training programmes were introduced, including Campus Studio (camera equipment, post-production and rough cut editing) and scriptwriting programmes. 50 Talents from all over South America took part in the Campus, meeting experts such as Thomas Mauch (pictured left), Bettina Böhler, Jean-Pierre Rehm, Carmen Guarini, and Bernhard Sallmann. Representatives of international funding bodies and training platforms for filmmakers including Alesia Weston (Sundance Lab), Marten Rabarts (Binger Filmlab), Vincenzo Bugno (World Cinema Fund), Violeta Bava (BAL), Franz Rodenkirchen (Torino Film Lab) and Ilse Hughan (Hubert Bals Fund) advised Talents on how to develop and finance their scripts.

The co-production market parallel to BAFICI, the Buenos Aires Lab (BAL) selected projects of Talent Campus Buenos Aires alumni Juan Pablo Di Bitonto (producer, Argentina) and Alváro Olmos (director, Bolivia), as well as Talent Campus Guadalajara alumnus Jorge Andrés Botero (producer, Colombia).

UPCOMING: 3rd TALENT CAMPUS DURBAN (July 23–27, 2010)

The 31st Durban International Film Festival (July 22 – August 1, 2010) is proud to announce the third edition of Talent Campus Durban from July 23–27, 2010, an intensive five-day programme of workshops and seminars delivered by film professionals to enhance both theoretical and practical approaches to filmmaking. The 3rd Talent Campus Durban theme “Focusing on Africa: Unleashing Talent in 2010” will centre activities on developing and strengthening partnerships between African filmmakers.

Filmmakers from Africa were invited to apply. In addition to specific activities offered by the Talent Campus Durban, the selected Talents will have the opportunity to attend films and events at the 31st Durban International Film Festival.

CALL FOR ENTRIES: 4th TALENT CAMPUS SARAJEVO (July 25-31, 2010)

Up-and-coming filmmakers from South-Eastern Europe are invited to apply for the fourth edition of the Talent Campus Sarajevo, which takes place from July 25-31, 2010. This year's theme is “Storytelling – From Your Backyard to the World”. The deadline for applications is May 16, 2010.

The fourth edition of the Talent Campus Sarajevo takes place from July 25-31, 2010.

Talent Campus Sarajevo  is a seven-day networking platform for emerging filmmakers from South-Eastern Europe. During the 16th Sarajevo Film Festival, selected young film professionals will have the opportunity to learn from renowned film experts willing to share their knowledge and experience. Former experts include: Darren Aronofsky, Aida Begić, Juliette Binoche, Steve Buscemi, Terry George, Jeremy Irons, Charlie Kaufman, Ademir Kenović, Britta Knöller, Čedomir Kolar, Bernd Lange, Mike Leigh, Leon Lučev, Branko Lustig, Anamaria Marinca, Michael Moore, Alexander Payne, Corneliu Porumboiu, Hans-Christian Schmid, Jim Sheridan, Stellan Skarsgård, Kevin Spacey, Danis Tanović, Jasmila Žbanić, Pjer Žalica and many more.

The application for the Talent Campus Sarajevo is open to screenwriters, directors, actors and producers (young film professionals and advanced film students in final years of their study) from the following countries: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Hungary, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Turkey and UNMI Kosovo.

3. PLAY IT AGAIN: WATCHING EVENTS OF BERLINALE TALENT CAMPUS 2010 ONLINE

4. BERLIN TODAY AWARD 2011 IS “LEAVING THE FAMILIAR SECTOR”

Five short film projects from Romania, Japan, Ireland and Great Britain have been nominated after the Berlinale Talent Campus 2010 and are focusing on stories beyond the expected, “Leaving The Familiar Sector”.
 
The following five Talent-producer teams were selected by the jury to continue to the Berlin Today Award 2011 finals:

In The Ambassador's Wife, Michael Lavelle from Ireland tells the story of Sandra, who is willing to go beyond all boundaries for the body of her dreams. The project will be produced by Macchiato Pictures Filmproduktion. Eva Pervolovici from Romania will direct Little Red in collaboration with Beleza Film, a fairy tale about female initiation from the point of view of ten-year-old Ica. Together with Kloos & Co. Media, British director Tristan Daws will film The Day We Danced on the Moon, a documentary that follows the members of the reggae band "Channel One", a group of mental health patients who use their music to express the experience of psychosis. heimatmedien will produce Spoilt Broth with Toby Roberts, also from Great Britain, a black comedy about a post office robbery that takes a highly unusual turn. Finally, in Hackney Lullabies, Kyoko Miyake from Japan will portray three young migrant mothers in the London neighbourhood of Hackney and ask them about their dreams and hopes for themselves and their children in their new home. This documentary film will be produced by Filmkantine.

The five short films will be realised by the end of 2010 with support from the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg. The five films will celebrate their world premiere during the Opening of the Berlinale Talent Campus 2011 (February 12 – 17, 2011). A jury consisting of prominent filmmakers will select the winning film and bestow it with the Berlin Today Award.

5. IN MEMORIAM: EL HADJI SAMBA SARR (1968 - 2010)

It was with grief that we received the news of the sudden death of the Senegalese filmmaker El Hadji Samba Sarr, who according to his family died last week from the effects of malaria.

El Hadji Samba Sarr took part in the Talent Campus Durban in 2009 and in this year's Berlinale Talent Campus, where he participated in the Campus Editing Studio with his documentary project Bassari Green Gold.

El Hadji Samba Sarr was considered an important voice of the Senegalese and African cinema. His work includes over a dozen films, among them the award-winning Amulyakar (Those Without Hope, 2002) and Graines que la mer emporte (2007). In 2009 he realised La Discorde, a short fiction posing the problem of culture shock, which was presented at several festivals and was awarded the "Prix d'encouragement" at the Festival Films Panafricains du FNUAP, Dakar.

The Campus team mourns the loss of El Hadji Samba Sarr and expresses its deep sympathy to his family, friends and colleagues.
